1938 Video of Sri T. Krishnamacharya Practicing Asana and Bandhas
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd_eTupTCbI]
I have previously seen this footage in the context of a French documentary “100 Years of Beatitude,” which was made on the occasion of Krishnamacharya’s centennial celebrations in 1988. While watching this, keep in mind that in 1938 he is 50 years old – exactly only halfway through his remarkable teaching career. On June 21st of that year, my teacher, T.K.V. Desikachar was born. -
Kaminoff Makes Case Against Insurance, Formal Regulation, Dictated Standards
This interview with me was just posted on John Weeks’ Integrator blog. It’s part of a series sponsored by IAYT on the future of Yoga Therapy and its role in interdisciplinary healthcare. Regular readers of e-Sutra will know that I have some strong feelings on this topic, and the current interview puts many of these across quite well. Money quote:
“Yoga is about connection – that between the student and teacher. Any third party that inserts itself into that relationship will destroy it. It doesn’t matter if that is an insurer, a government agency or a band of well-intentioned Yoga teachers.”
I encourage your comments and feedback – all of which will be noted with interest by IAYT, as we prepare for the January SYTAR event, where I will co-moderate a panel on these issues that will include John Weeks. -

Thanks to the generosity of a number of donors, we are very pleased to offer a limited number of discounted tickets to our Gala Fundraiser on November 16th, featuring a special concert with Krishna Das and David Hykes. The discounted price is $150. – one hundred dollars off the full price. The evening includes an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, a silent and live celebrity auction and the concert.

Video of the Week – Indian Boys’ Yoga Demo
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voHs9UgFDgM]
Demonstrations like these are not uncommon in India, which is where I’m assuming this video was shot – although for the life of me, I can’t figure out why the soundtrack is playing tacky Russian folk music. -
Video of the Week: Kung Fu vs. Yoga
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrYlNNy929Y]I want to thank everyone for the video clips they’ve been sending in. I will attempt to post the best ones about once a week. This one comes from my friend Jodi Kurilla in Portland, and it’s truly hysterical – especially the French dubbing of the Indian accent. The clip is from the 1979 classic “Kung Fu vs. Yoga.” Enjoy.

Advanced Concepts in Adapting Practice with Carl Horowitz
I am very pleased about an ongoing seminar that my friend and colleague Carl Horowitz has just started teaching on Tuesdays at The Breathing Project in New York City. Carl is offering a really great opportunity to deepen your understanding of Yoga practice. Carl has a knack for helping students and teachers to get more from what they are doing by fully articulating all the variables involved in a yoga practice. -
"Stillness Through the Heart" Special Workshop Added for this Wednesday
My old friend Navtej Johar will be in NYC this Wednesday teaching from 4-8PM at The Breathing Project. I can’t recommend highly enough this very special teacher, who has been a student of T.K.V. Desikachar since 1985 (longer than me). I know it’s last minute, but do whatever you can to be here with us – I guarantee you’ll be happy you did.The workshop will focus on one or more of the various elements that make up yoga practice in the tradition of Sri T. Krishnamacharya and Sri T.K.V. Desikachar: asana, pranayama, meditation, Vedic chanting, and a study of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.
